<p>Fancy a classic cod and chips to eat on the pier? Well, you better get in line as there invariably is one outside <a href="https://www.maryjanes.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Mary Janes</a>, but it&#8217;s always worth the wait. A <strong>Cromer</strong> institution, it&#8217;s fuelled day trippers, locals on lunch and the culinary challenged since 1977. Back in the day it was just a takeaway now Mary Janes has a restaurant which seats over 60 and a more varied menu covering all fish bases, as well as burgers, pies, sausages and the delectable halloumi fries, and a great selection for vegetarians too.</p>

<p>Fish ’n’ chips but make it funky?&nbsp;<a href="https://www.fshshop.com/">Grosvenor Fish Bar</a>&nbsp;in <strong>Norwich</strong> it is then, with its industrial bolthole-style dining and imaginative take on your usual chip-shop fare. They’ve got Bass with Sass (crispy sea bass wraps with lettuce and spicy mango chutney), Waco Tacos (spicy cod with salsa, lettuce, sour cream and cheese) and, my personal favourite, Krusty Krab (softshell crab roll with lettuce, coleslaw, fried green toms, Po’boy sauce and chips). For traditionalists, a simple cod and chips is topnotch here too. Get yours to go or dine in the atmospheric vaulted undercroft. Who says the best chippies are by the coast?</p>

<p>If you were to find the platonic ideal of fish and chips, it might look a little something like this: the freshest fish, the crispiest batter, the tastiest golden chips – it’s no wonder the likes of Giles Coren et al have been known to rave about&nbsp;<a href="https://www.instagram.com/ericsfandc/?hl=en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Eric’s</a>. They also have a notorious but presumably delicious deep-fried jam sandwich on their menu, as well as other contemporary twists like halloumi and spinach arancini, homemade black garlic mayo, and even a Japanese-style fish burger. You can eat in at their coastal restaurant in <strong>Thornham</strong> at&nbsp;<a href="https://www.instagram.com/droveorchards/?hl=en" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Drove Orchards</a>, at the branch in the Georgian market town of <strong>Holt</strong>, or arrange to click and collect.</p>

<p>With the Michelin-starred, celeb chef, Galton Blackiston of <a href="https://www.morstonhall.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Morston Hall</a> at the helm, it&#8217;s no surprise that this seafront stunner is called <a href="https://no1cromer.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">No1</a>. Whilst enjoying the endless views across <strong>Cromer</strong> beach from the two-story restaurant, you&#8217;ll be tucking into fish so fresh it&#8217;s practically still flapping. The upstairs restaurant caters for foodies with dishes like Thai green crab bisque, king prawn Goan curry and pan-roasted catch of the day on the menu. It&#8217;s downstairs where you&#8217;ll find your more typical fish and chip shop dishes but with a Michelin twist &#8211; mmm, sticky tempura prawns. Can&#8217;t get a table? No1 does take away too.</p>

Enter <strong>Hunstanton</strong> institution, <a href="https://www.henrysofhunstanton.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Henry&#8217;s</a> with its chic panelled walls, leather booths and swanky lighting. There&#8217;s something quite wonderful about eating a huge piece of battered cod and mountain of chips whilst sipping on fizz in the fine surrounds, but Henry&#8217;s also serves some alternatives to match its swanky decor &#8211; lemon, chilli and coriander king prawn skewers, salt and pepper squid and homemade salmon fishcakes. The chips fried in beef dripping are particularly lip-smacking. Veggies, fear not, other alternatives are available.</p>

A stalwart on the seafront for over 90 years, the menu is simple, majoring in fresh-from-the-boat cod, haddock and plaice with traditional sides &#8211; who doesn&#8217;t love a pickled egg? Though eating from the paper al fresco overlooking the Quay is a dream on a sunny day, the trad chequered wall tiles and lime green furniture of <a href="https://www.frenchs.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">French&#8217;s Fish Shop</a> will certainly liven up your Insta feed if you decide to dine in. </p>

The menu is modest but ticks all the boxes and even has a selection of fancy salts and vinegars to pimp up your chips. Delish.</p>
