<p>If the words&nbsp;<em>glamping</em>&nbsp;– or worse,&nbsp;<em>camping</em>&nbsp;– send shivers down your spine, allow me to introduce you to Deer&#8217;s Glade. This sprawling North Norfolk camping, caravan and glamping destination caters for every kind of outdoor sleeper. From tent-phobes like me, who love the nature, stars, fire pits and marshmallow roasting of the great outdoors but prefer a proper bed, electricity and running water within easy reach, to seasoned campers who relish a night under canvas, <em>everyone</em> is catered for.</p>



<p>Family-run since 2004, Deer&#8217;s Glade is something of a Norfolk hidden gem – although judging by how busy it was during my stay, perhaps not&nbsp;<em>that</em>&nbsp;hidden. Made up of three separate sites, the main family-friendly site in Hanworth which is home to the reception, shop, touring pitches, <a href="https://www.deersglade.co.uk/stargazer-bell-tents" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">bell tents</a>, <a href="https://www.deersglade.co.uk/camping-pods" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">camping</a>&nbsp;and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.deersglade.co.uk/mega-pods" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">glamping pods</a>. Just down the road in Erpingham is the adults-only <a href="https://www.deersglade.co.uk/deers-mead" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Deer’s Mead</a>, while <a href="https://www.deersglade.co.uk/muntjac-meadow" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Muntjac Meadow</a> offers a more back-to-nature wild camping experience for those happiest living off-grid. Whether you&#8217;re after a fully equipped glamping getaway or a traditional camping adventure, Deer&#8217;s Glade has found a way to make the great outdoors accessible to just about everyone.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-vibe">THE VIBE</h2>

<p>It&#8217;s like stepping into a Disney film! Deer wander through the site (I mean, it&#8217;s called Deer&#8217;s Glade for a reason), a pair of geese and their goslings paddled serenely past during my stay, and the soundtrack is owls, many, many different birds and the occasional fox on repeat. There are even resident goats to feed and fuss over if you aren&#8217;t maxed out on animal encounters.</p>



<p>The atmosphere is wonderfully laidback too. From check-in onwards, everything feels relaxed and easy-going, with friendly staff on hand if you need advice, directions, or an extra bag of marshmallows for the fire pit.</p>



<p>What surprised me most, however, was the sense of community. Perhaps it&#8217;s something about spending your days outdoors, but there&#8217;s a friendliness here that&#8217;s hard to miss. Children roam between bikes and play areas, neighbours stop for a chat, and evenings are spent gathered around barbecues and fires. Deer&#8217;s Glade has all the ingredients of a classic camping holiday, just without any pressure to be a camping person. </p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-glamping-retreat">THE GLAMPING RETREAT</h2>

<p>During my stay, I checked into one of the site&#8217;s glamping pods – the perfect middle ground for anyone who likes the&nbsp;<em>idea</em> of camping more than the reality. In fact, Deer&#8217;s Glade may well have ruined glamping for me forever because my new benchmark now includes a private hot tub, heating, a proper kitchen, a comfy bed and somewhere to plug in my hairdryer.</p>



<p>Thoughtfully designed and surprisingly spacious, the pod had everything I could possibly need and then some. There were fluffy robes ready for hot tub duty, extra blankets for cooler evenings and a welcome hamper complete with tea, coffee, cookies, fresh milk and a bottle of bubbly chilling in the fridge. The kitchen was fully equipped too – and I mean&nbsp;<em>fully</em>. Hob, microwave, toaster, plenty of crockery and, crucially, a corkscrew. Outside, a barbecue, fire pit and cushioned seating area made it very easy to while away an evening under the stars.</p>

<p>Practical touches haven&#8217;t been overlooked either. You can park right next to the pod, making unloading blissfully painless, and everything felt spotlessly clean (the laundry smelt incredible). The children&#8217;s bunk beds looked a little too cosy for my liking, but I can safely say younger guests will think they&#8217;re the greatest thing ever.</p>



<p>I happened to visit on one of the warmest nights of the year so far, so the pod was a little toasty on arrival, but opening the windows soon sorted that. Not that I wanted to spend much time asleep – there was a hot tub waiting, after all – but when I did finally turn in, the bed was exceptionally comfortable.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-scoff-amp-quaff">SCOFF &amp; QUAFF</h2>

<p>Banish any thoughts of heating up a tin of beans over a campfire. Deer&#8217;s Glade has food and drink thoroughly covered. First up, there&#8217;s the onsite shop, which somehow manages to stock everything you could possibly need for a camping trip, including all the things you&#8217;ll inevitably forget (in my case, bread). Expect local cheeses, barbecue essentials, ice cream, chocolate, decent coffee, wine, beer and enough freezer favourites to keep even the fussiest little campers happy.</p>



<p>If all that sounds like too much effort, you&#8217;ll be pleased to hear there&#8217;s also a regular rotation of excellent street food vendors pitching up on site, from wood-fired pizzas to loaded burgers. So if your holiday motto is &#8220;absolutely no cooking&#8221;, Deer&#8217;s Glade is more than happy to oblige.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-child-friendly">CHILD-FRIENDLY?</h2>

<p>Absolutely. In fact, I&#8217;d go so far as to say this is the sort of place that becomes a family tradition. The kind where children spend all day outdoors making friends, parents actually get five minutes to sit down, and annual trips become non-negotiable. There&#8217;s plenty of space to roam safely, wildlife to discover and enough activities nearby to keep boredom firmly at bay including a fab play area. Travelling without children? Deer&#8217;s Mead, the site&#8217;s sister location just down the road, is exclusively for 18+.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-dog-friendly">DOG-FRIENDLY?</h2>

<p>Very much so. Dogs are welcome across the campsite, making it a great option for four-legged family members. Just note that not all glamping accommodation is dog-friendly, so it&#8217;s worth checking when booking if you&#8217;re planning to bring your pooch along.</p>

<p>One of the <em>many</em> strengths of Deer&#8217;s Glade is its location. Peaceful and rural, yet within easy reach of some of North Norfolk&#8217;s biggest attractions. Cromer (above) is perfect for beach days, crab sandwiches and a stroll along the pier, while neighbouring <a href="https://norfolk.muddystilettos.co.uk/best-places-to-live/norfolk/sheringham/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Sheringham</a> offers equally charming seaside fun.</p>



<p>For family days out, you&#8217;re within easy reach of <a href="https://bewilderwood.co.uk/norfolk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">BeWILDerwood</a>, <a href="https://amazonazoo.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Amazona Zoo</a> and the <a href="https://www.burevalleyrailway.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bure Valley Railway</a>, while those looking to stay closer to home can enjoy walks around the site, fishing, wildlife spotting and visits to the resident goats. Or, of course, you can do what I did and embrace a bit of world-class loafing around with a glass of something cold in hand.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-the-muddy-verdict">THE MUDDY VERDICT</h2>



<p><strong>Good for:</strong>&nbsp;Just about everyone. Families, couples, groups of friends, seasoned campers and glamping converts alike. Particularly those who like a holiday with plenty of freedom to do as much &#8211; or as little &#8211; as they please.</p>



<p><strong>Not for:</strong>&nbsp;Anyone seeking a formal hotel experience complete with set meal times, pressed tablecloths and a rigid itinerary. Deer&#8217;s Glade is all about relaxed, outdoor living &#8211; albeit with considerably more comfort than you might expect.</p>



<p><strong>The damage</strong>: <em>Really</em> reasonable, pitches start from £27 per night for a non-electric grass pitch, while bell tents start from £250 for two nights, and the luxurious glamping pods from £451 for three nights. The onsite shop is incredibly affordable too.</p>
