Ta da! The AA Restaurant Guide 2023 has been revealed, and plenty of our local haunts feature in its pages this year, with six Norfolk restaurants achieving three or more rosettes.

Scoring another one for the trophy cabinet, Michelin-starred <a href="https://www.morstonhall.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Morston Hall</a> (above) in North Norfolk got four rosettes, which means the cooking demands national recognition. Galton and the team will be pleased!

Five Norfolk entries got three rosettes: <a href="https://restaurantbenedicts.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Benedict&#8217;s</a>, <a href="https://farmyard.restaurant" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Farmyard</a> and <a href="https://www.rogerhickmansrestaurant.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Roger Hickman&#8217;s</a> in Norwich, and North Norfolk&#8217;s <a href="https://titchwellmanor.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Titchwell Manor</a> and Michelin-starred <a href="https://theneptune.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Neptune</a> in Hunstanton.

<a href="https://theproperpizza.co/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Proper Pizza Co</a> has just joined the foodie hub in the downstairs space of gorgeous boutique hotel&nbsp;<a href="https://www.ironmongers-aylsham.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Ironmongers</a> in Aylsham. Fast-food with a gourmet flair, their pizzas are handmade Neapolitan style and wood fired to perfection in just 90 seconds! They join Muddy favourites <a href="https://www.facebook.com/msofaylsham/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">M’s of Aylsham</a>, a fish deli, tapas and cocktail bar, and&nbsp;<a href="https://www.bread-source.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bread Source</a>&#8216;s cafe and artisan bakery.

The latest stop on our ever-growing city cocktail crawl has just opened in Pottergate, Norwich. Well, hello <a href="https://www.instagram.com/drawingroomsbar/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Drawing Rooms</a> &#8211; looking glowy after its extensive refurb. Race you there for a flat white martini.

We&#8217;re raising a G&amp;T (and vegan donut burger!) to Norwich&#8217;s newest indie-led street food and entertainment venue, <a href="https://castlequarternorwich.co.uk/2022/10/31/castle-social-now-open/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Castle Social</a>, housed in the former food court in Norwich&#8217;s Castle Quarter. Looking swish under the domed glass roof, the central bar Pinker &amp; Green serves drinks, cocktails, charcuterie and cake grazing boards. It is surrounded by local street food kitchens, including vegan fast food from Hank&#8217;s Dirty Norwich.



Whoopee! The long-anticipated <a href="https://www.yalm.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Yalm Foodhall</a> has just announced its official opening date of 22 Nov. Based in the former Jamie’s Italian in the Royal Arcade, the two-storey, £2 million indoor food court will be showcasing some of the best independent chefs and kitchens from the region within the stunning art-nouveau setting. There’s no need to book, but we&#8217;re predicting a stampede when the doors finally open!

Sadly, we&#8217;re saying&nbsp;goodbye&nbsp;to the lovely 100% vegan family biz Ancestors Coffee House in Norwich, which has just closed its doors. But it&#8217;s an excitable hello to <a href="https://www.instagram.com/doxicocktails/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Doxi Cocktails</a> who are moving into Norwich’s <a href="https://www.alchemistacoffee.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Alchemista Coffee Potions</a> (above) on 26 Nov. By day, it&#8217;ll still be the artisan coffee shop we know and love, but by night (well, from 5pm) it will transform into a cool cocktail bar, serving Alchemista&#8217;s indulgent coffee cocktails alongside <a href="https://doxibars.co.uk/shop/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Doxi</a>&#8216;s classy concoctions (plus draught and craft beers, and local wines and spirits).



Whispers of flower walls and dragon cocktails to come in the new year when Silhouette restaurant opens on Timber Hill in Jan 2023. If its sister restaurant, <a href="https://www.facebook.com/IlSalvatorerestaurant/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Il Salvatore in Suffolk</a>, is anything to go by it promises plenty of floral Instagram fodder.

City residents rejoice! If you can&#8217;t get to Norwich Market, <a href="https://surplush.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Surplush</a>&#8216;s electric grocery bikes will bring it to you. This new venture set up by two locals delivers food sourced from the market and a few other indie shops to NR1-NR7. It&#8217;s not all essentials either &#8211; unless you count cookies and brookies from And Eat It (they&#8217;re staples in our book!). You can even pick up a houseplant or two from Planted. The aim is to help reduce congestion in the city as well as cutting emissions. Hurrah to that!

Join Maggie in the bakery where she&#8217;ll divulge all the tips and tricks so you can whip up a batch of 30 to take home, frozen, to bake whenever you fancy. We&#8217;re eyeing up the <a href="https://fraakost.co.uk/shop" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Extended Bun Workshop</a>, which includes breakfast, buns, coffee, tea and a light lunch. Did you hear? Not only is <a href="https://bookbugsanddragontales.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Bookbugs &amp; Dragon Tales</a> in Norwich a double Muddy Awards winner (scooping Best Bookshop for two years running), it has also sparked the interest of an A-list movie star. Russell Crowe donated £5,000 to the recent crowdfunding campaign to help secure the future of the business, which has struggled to recover since Covid. Following media coverage of his donation, they hit their target within 48 hours and went on to exceed it &#8211; leaving them feeling very warm and fuzzy indeed! For anyone still wishing to show their love, please consider their <a href="https://www.gofundme.com/f/dorothy-amery-readers-awards" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Dorothy Amery fund</a> which aims to bring the gift of books to children who would otherwise not have access to them.

They say it&#8217;s a dogs life &#8211; but pooches in Norfolk have it best of all. And they are not about to miss out on all the Christmas shenanigans either. Wagging tales will be heading towards <a href="https://theforumnorwich.co.uk/whats-on/santas-grotto-for-dogs" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Santa’s Grotto for Dogs</a> at The Forum on 10 Dec from 10am to 3pm. Pose with Santa Woof Woof, create some special Christmas ‘pawtraits’ and show your support for Santa’s little helpers from the RSPCA and the Pets as Therapy charities.&nbsp;



Norfolk pubs are notoriously dog friendly, but the <a href="https://www.kingsarmsludham.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">King&#8217;s Arms in Ludham</a> gets the hungry hound vote. Its new canine menu includes roast dinners, with a choice of four types of meat, vegetables and gravy. The human roasts are pretty fine too so we hear.
