<p>We may have moved on since the days of ‘one for me, one for the punnet’ &#8211; because that’s, ahem, technically stealing &#8211; but picking your own fruit is still the most fun you can have in a field with your family. </p>



<p>Strawberries may be delish but we’re expanding our PYO horizons with flowers, plums, apples and types of produce we have frankly never even heard of (tayberry, jostaberry or snozzcumber, anyone? OK, the latter is BFG but the others are certified PYO!). </p>



<p>Sticky fingers and wide-brimmed hats at the ready, we bring you some seriously wholesome rural fun with our guide to the best of the PYO bunch.&nbsp;</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-sharrington-strawberries-sharrington"><strong><a href="http://sharringtonstrawberries.co.uk">Sharrington Strawberries</a>, </strong>Sharrington</h2>



<p>Sharrington strawberries are as famous in Norfolk as Brancaster mussels and Cromer crab. They are stocked in shops throughout the county, along with their other berries, currants and asparagus, but it’s far more fun to pluck them straight from the field than off the shelf. The PYO field can be found next to their open-air farm shop on the A148 near Holt. Only pay for what you pick &#8211; they weigh the punnets not the pickers (phew). Slam on the brakes on when you see the giant strawberry!</p>

<p>Pile your punnets high with strawberries and raspberries at this established PYO spot on the edge of the Norfolk Broads. Fruit is grown on tabletop for easy picking and mostly under polytunnels so rain needn’t stop play. Strawberry and raspberry season is still in full force with runner beans and plums now ripe for the picking too. Handily, there is also a well-stocked plant shop, garden centre, and farm shop selling a wide range of fruit and veg grown on the 260-acre farm. If you are feeling peckish, the café serves freshly cooked seasonal snacks and meals, using local and homegrown ingredients. Book ahead for the afternoon tea! <p>The kids will love this quirky combo of PYO and football golf. After a kick about on the nine-hole course, refresh with juicy strawberries freshly plucked from the 10 tabletop rows. A double parenting win: exercise and 5 a day! With the zoo opposite (they share a carpark) and Cromer seafront just a 10-minute stroll, you can plan a jam-packed family day. Open daily for the summer holidays.</p>

<p>Families have flocked to the fields of this PYO near Great Yarmouth for more than 40 years. Keep an eye on <a href="https://www.facebook.com/thetacons" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Facebook</a> for opening times but currently redcurrants and blackberries are currently on the vine. Return in autumn for pumpkins and onions. You are welcome to bring your own container to fill. Needing greens? Don’t miss out on the farm shop where you can stock up on homegrown veggies and other supplies, including Norfolk Farmhouse ice cream to accompany your hand-picked fruit. There are chickens for the children to admire and a set of swings.</p>

<p>Tucked down a small lane between Hales and Haddiscoe, Hillfield is a plant nursery, farm shop and PYO set in 30 acres. Keep an eye on <a href="https://www.facebook.com/profile.php?id=100063504794343" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Facebook</a> for picking updates. You can currently get your mitts on tayberries, sunberries, raspberries and blackcurrants with just a few strawberries still to be found too. No café but the farm shop sells its own produce, apple juice and honey, as well as other local products. </p>

<p>Juicy, crisp and straight off the tree &#8211; apples are abundant at <a href="https://www.instagram.com/droveorchards/?fbclid=IwY2xjawEq8qdleHRuA2FlbQIxMAABHa38pG6cRuRSwgwXn892KK8Dh1QbUEiK50ANygFJltiiHDP-sqNDl8TLvQ_aem_1LzLtxqgkshGa661jQOnDw" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Drove Orchards</a>, PYO &amp; Farm Shop, on the coast road between Holme and Thornham. The 45 picturesque acres of heritage orchards boast 160 different varieties, with 120 native to East Anglia. The farm shop stocks gallons of Drove’s traditionally pressed cider, apple, pear and quince juices, as well as all manner of local goodies. Save time for a pootle around the rest of the outlets in this fab little complex, including lifestyle shops, eateries and even a hair salon.</p>

<p>‘You’re turning violet, Violet!’ Blueberry-loving Beauregarde would be in her element in the fields of Fairgreen Farms, near King’s Lynn. Things are deliciously simple here with sun-ripened blueberries still in abundance until early September and, whilst stocks last, bottles of blueberry wine to wash them down (sounds heavenly!).</p>

<p>Plum-picking season runs untilmid-Sept (updates <a href="https://www.leithorchards.com/live-blog" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">here</a>) at Leith House Orchards, located between Burnham Market and Wells-next-the-Sea. The five large and luscious orchards have over 40 different varieties of plums, damsons, gages and apples. The plums kick off with the Hermans and end with the Anna Spaths in mid-September (don’t worry, Victoria will be putting in an appearance). You can buy ready picked from the pretty, bunting-fringed stall in the orchard which also sells coffee, Leith’s own plum produce (sweet plum vinegar, jam and chutney), along with honey from the beehives in the orchard and their own apple juice. Best of all, this PYO is a licensed premises (woo-hoo!). So, if you are plum-tuckered after all that picking, revive with a beer under the trees from Leith&#8217;s sister brewery, Malt Coast.</p>
