The White Horse, Brancaster

Lovely 40 min drive from King's Lynn on the A149 coast road, just over an hour from Norwich, this is a fab foodie destination with stunning views over the wild saltmarsh.

Weekend Escapes

The White Horse is a light, airy award-winning restaurant, pub and boutique hotel on North Norfolk’s spectacular saltmarsh in Brancaster Staithe. Booked tables only in the sunny conservatory restaurant and decked terrace (stunning views of the Norfolk Coastal Path and the tidal marsh beyond to Scolt Head Island). But the courtyard and outside bar are first come first served. And you will so want to be first at that gorgeous Marshside watering hole. It’s THE perfect place to eat seafood (with a chilled Chablis, please) as the lobster pots and oyster beds are literally a stone’s throw away.

The relaxed pub inside welcomes a mix of locals (the fishermen who caught your dinner) and visitors – plus calm dogs! There’s a breezy seaside vibe and is a great place to grab lunch and a pint of the local brewery ale. In the evening we recommend a large glass of red and a big bowl of local mussels by the fire.

Head Chef Fran Hartshorne loves working with Norfolk’s fabulous local produce and it totally shines in her consistently delicious – and award winning – cooking. ‘Staithe Smokehouse’ smoked cod mashed potato, spinach, poached egg with cockle hollandaise is a favourite. Did we mention she and Phil run a smokehouse at the bottom of the garden?

There are also 15 very comfortable seasidey bedrooms and you can book relaxing holistic therapy treatments in the privacy of your room. Ask for a room with a view – the stars are breathtaking at night! And the hot ticket ‘Room at the Top’ is split over two levels with its own viewing telescope.

In the summer there’s a whole lot of good stuff going on like gin cocktail evenings and lobster BBQs. If you’re planning on making a weekend of it, The Jolly Sailors pub at the other end of the village is owned by the same people, has a great beer garden and a pizza oven – perfect for kids and ‘straight off the beach’ grub.

This is the perfect location for exploring the best of North Norfolk. You’re walking distance from the local beach and a short drive to other great stretches of coastline including Holkham, Wells-next-the-Sea and Old Hunstanton and Burnham Market is worth the 15 minute drive for a mooch around the cosmopolitan boutiques, cafés and restaurants.

Dalegate Market is walkable too and you’ll find some lovely independent shops and galleries. Fingers crossed the lovely indie Christmas market will be back this year too.

The White Horse is easy to find on the main road through the village. There’s plenty of off-road parking and a couple of Tesla chargers too.
