The Dun Cow, Salthouse
Lovely coastal pub with fab food and pretty garden overlooking the dramatic saltmarsh. Under an hour from Norwich on the scenic coast road (A149).
The Dun Cow is a breezy, friendly local favourite, overlooking the wild marsh at Salthouse, a lovely village right in the middle of the glorious North Norfolk Coast. The seasonal menu is excellent value and a consistently imaginative take on pub food with the best local ingredients simply but expertly cooked. In fact (non-meat eaters look away now) some produce is so local that you can munch a burger whilst watching the rest of its family grazing on the saltmarshes across the road.
Lively families and peaceful dogs are always very welcome inside (very cosy and popular in winter) and also at the generous tables on the sweeping front lawn overlooking the marsh. There’s an extremely pretty Secret Garden at the back where well behaved adults are allowed – this is based on the sweet idea that adults are quieter…not necessarily the case once the Prosecco is flowing. Oh and the planting is beautifully airy, something we’ve overheard mentioned by several inspired visitors (not that we’re eavesdropping, obvs) keen to rush home and copy the Dun Cow’s coastal vibe. Well done that gardener!
There are big hearty dishes like delicious fish pie and rich risottos, classic juicy burgers and gorgeous garlicky lobster with skinny fries. We also love the thoughtfully curated list of small dishes starting at £7, great for a light lunch with the girls and more modest appetites (whatever they are). A particular delight is a glass of ice cold sherry with half a dozen super fresh oysters. Holiday on a plate.
They open at 11.30 and serve food from noon until 8:30pm every day. Although some tables are available for walk-ups, it’s best to book ahead or suffer serious FOMO when you hear the clinking glasses and laughter echoing across the lawn…
