Redwings Horse Sanctuary, various locations

Looking for a day out that won’t cost the earth (or your sanity)? Redwings Horse Sanctuary is a free, feel-good day out where kids roam, donkeys steal hearts – and everyone leaves smiling.

Big-hearted, brilliantly run and a guaranteed mood-lifter, Redwings Horse Sanctuary is one of Norfolk’s best family days out. It’s the UK’s largest horse welfare charity and – deep breath – completely free to enter, making it a unicorn of an outing for parents, pony-mad kids and anyone craving a little wholesome joy. Perfect for weekends, school holidays, or any day really.

With visitor centres across the UK – including the flagship Caldecott site near Norwich and the literary gem Anna Sewell House, the birthplace of Black Beauty’s author – Redwings is home to more than 1,300 rescued horses, ponies and donkeys. Expect soft noses, swishing tails, gentle encounters and a chorus of “can we stay longer?”.

It’s calm, friendly and beautifully unfussy – enough to keep little ones busy without tipping anyone over the edge. Each  site has a welcoming café for a post-paddock cuppa and cake, plus a gift shop where every purchase helps fund the care of the residents you’ve just fallen for. You can even adopt a horse or donkey which includes an invite to their birthday party. Aww.

Free, heart-stealing and guaranteed to leave you smiling. Saddle up!
