Chet Valley Vineyard, Bergh Apton

Just 20 minutes from Norwich, family-run Chet Valley in South Norfolk is a destination vineyard and winery. Visit for a tour, themed supper or a stay in its holiday cottage overlooking the vines.

Since planting its first vines over a decade ago, Chet Valley Vineyard has gained a reputation for quality artisanal wine, winning international and national awards. Bottles flying out of its onsite winery at pace include the sparkling Skylark and Redwing rosé, named after the many beautiful birds that visit the vineyard.

Crowned Best Sustainable Lifestyle Business in our Muddy Awards 2023, Chet Valley takes sustainability seriously, with owner winemaker John Hemman and wife Bridget taking extra steps to protect local wildlife and the unique surroundings. It’s made for a wonderful natural space to explore and a range of stand-out sustainable sips, including Chet Valley’s traditionally made sparkling wine, bottled onsite.

Chet Valley’s aromatic whites, bold reds and characterful rosés are available via its website, or you can buy directly from the Wine Cellar Door but best to ring ahead as they may be out pruning, leaf stripping or grape picking!

Rock up on a Friday or Saturday afternoon in the summer and you can enjoy drinks in the Wine Meadow from the Skylark Bar by the pond (well-behaved dogs on leads welcome). We’ll be ordering the wine flight (£12 for three 50ml glasses) – it’s a great way to sample the various wines, with the knowledgable staff on hand to give tips on food pairing.

There’s a whole host of other events to try at Chet Valley, including their popular wine-tasting tours, which run from April until end October. Or what about a picnic in the vines complete with a hamper of Norfolk goodies, or the new themed suppers?

The Wine Hall, a magical space above the winery with stunning views over the vines from its vast windows and balcony, can be hired for celebrations, parties and corporate events. Or get the full Chet Valley experience with a stay in its Vine House Holiday cottage, sleeping six, within stumbling distance of the vines.

Tours, tastings and a sleepover? Book us in!

PS. Fancy getting stuck in at the next grape harvest? Chet Valley are always keen to take on volunteers for this sociable event, which usually takes place over a couple of weekends in early October. Your hard work will be rewarded by lots of coffee and cake, lunch and then a harvest supper in the Wine Hall – with lovely Chet Valley wine of course! Watch this space for more info.
