<p>If you’re after something cosy and casual, <a href="https://thegreenhousenorfolk.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Greenhouse</a> &#8211;&nbsp;a lounge, bar and kitchen tucked in the back of <a href="https://www.downhamgardenstore.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Downham Home &amp; Garden Centre</a> &#8211; is your all-day go-to. Whether you&#8217;re stopping by for breakfast, afternoon tea or a Sunday roast, it has you covered (and we defy you to leave without picking up a plant or two while you&#8217;re there!). Right next door is <a href="https://www.arbuckles.biz" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Arbuckles</a>, a crowd-pleasing favourite serving up hearty US diner classics. And for something a little more scenic, head to <a href="https://www.theheronstowbridge.com" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">The Heron Stowbridge</a> &#8211; perched on the banks of the Great River Ouse, it dishes up traditional English fare with seriously gorgeous waterside views.</p>

Speaking of your barnet, the award-winning, eco-conscious <a href="https://www.crafthairdressers.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Craft Hairdressers</a>, are the go-to for colour and extensions &#8211; their results (and sustainability creds) speak for themselves. Just up the road in Stow Bardolph,&nbsp;<a href="https://churchfarmstowbardolph.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Church Farm</a> is a lovely, family-friendly spot with animals, play areas and hands-on fun – and right next door, the ever-popular&nbsp;<a href="https://theharearms.co.uk" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Hare Arms</a>&nbsp;is ideal for refuelling after the adventure. A short drive gets you to&nbsp;<a href="https://www.forestryengland.uk/thetford-forest" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Thetford Forest</a>, a glorious stretch of woodland perfect for walking, cycling and wildlife spotting. History buffs will love the atmospheric ruins of&nbsp;<a href="https://www.english-heritage.org.uk/visit/places/castle-acre-castle-acre-priory/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Castle Acre Priory</a>, packed with medieval charm. <p>Downham&#8217;s Town Hall regularly opens its doors to local theatre, offering a cosy stage for homegrown talent. For a bigger cultural fix,&nbsp;King’s Lynn&nbsp;is your nearest hub, with a lively line-up of annual events including <a href="https://www.festivaltoo.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Festival Too</a>, the&nbsp;<a href="https://www.kingslynnfestival.org.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">King’s Lynn Festival</a>&nbsp;<em>and&nbsp;</em><a href="https://kllitfests.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">King’s Lynn Literature Festival</a>. The town’s beautifully restored <a href="https://www.kingslynncornexchange.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Corn Exchange</a> doubles as a plush theatre and cinema, while nearby&nbsp;<a href="https://www.westacretheatre.com/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Westacre Theatre</a> offers a more intimate arts experience. Along the coast is highly regarded&nbsp;<a href="https://glebehouseschool.co.uk/" target="_blank" rel="noreferrer noopener">Glebe House</a>, a nursery and prep school in Hunstanton which takes weekly boarders from ages 7 – 13 yrs. <h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-best-kept-secret">BEST KEPT SECRET</h2>



<p>Green fingers run deep in Downham’s roots. Back in the 19th century, the town was something of a horticultural hotspot, famed for its lush private gardens and thriving nurseries. Victorian plant-lover&nbsp;Joseph Bird&nbsp;made waves with his American Nurseries, importing exotic flora from across the Atlantic and earning a rep as a tree expert long before it was trendy. Not to be outdone, fellow green-thumbed local&nbsp;Joseph Harrison&nbsp;launched&nbsp;<em>The Floricultural Cabinet</em>&nbsp;– one of the very first gardening magazines. Monty Don, eat your heart out.</p>



<h2 class="wp-block-heading" id="h-commute">COMMUTE</h2>



<p>Not too shabby. Cambridge is 45 mins by car (30 mins by train), with Norwich and Peterborough just over an hour by car. It’s a 2.5 hrs drive to London or the train from King’s Lynn will get you there in 1 hr 40 mins direct into King’s Cross. </p>
