The Muddy guide – what’s On 7 – 11 September

From late summer BBQs to Sequence Dancing and from high-energy gigs to Pirate Festivals, summer may be over but Norfolk isn’t resting in its laurels. And with an Indian summer on the cards – for this week at least – neither is Muddy. Get out and about while it lasts…

Sequence Dancing, Hoveton
If the return of Strictly has made you keen to get your dancing shoes out the loft and start strutting your stuff on the dance floor, then why not check out Hoveton’s Sequence Dancing from 7.30pm until 10.00pm this coming Wednesday. Set in the village hall, the lesson is run by locals Margaret and Arthur who are Sequence Dance experts (you couldn’t make this stuff up for quaintness).

Dig out your cutlass and polish your parrot, lock up your rum and prepare for the biggest and best festival yet! Blackbeard and his crew are planning some special pirate surprises this year.  An annual fundraiser for the Wells Maltings Trust, the event is now in its 6th year and set to be bigger and swashbuckling-lier than ever with stalls, games, treasure trails, bingo and – the weekend’s highlight – The Smuggler’s Ball.

Late Summer BBQ, St Thomas Church, Norwich
St Thomas’ is no ordinary church. With a funky website, several awards and a host of year-round events (including the popular Norwich Makers’ Market and weekly swing classes), it’s worth popping by to see what’s going on. The Late Summer BBQ is a good example – a free event at the Vicarage Garden of the Earlham Road venue with a two-hour BBQ from midday. Tuck into a selection of meats and sides before continuing your Saturday afternoon and evening.

Great Yarmouth Maritime Festival, Great Yarmouth
A riot of colour and maritime music, the Maritime Festival celebrates the sea with a range of traditional and modern maritime vessels moored on South Quay for visitors to admire and go aboard. Shanty and maritime music will be performed at three different venues up and down South Quay: the Main Stage, The Fo’c’sle and Horatio’s Bar in the Market Place.
