Superflashy newsflash! The latest news in Norfolk

From pubs and pop-up shops to petting piglets, here's all the curated, cool and quirky Norfolk news you need this week.

Award-winning food and drink

You don’t need to tell us twice that Norfolk’s got some of the best scoff and quaff in the country, but it’s always nice to win an award or two, right? Here are some of the latest winners in our ‘hood…

Garden kitchen cafe

Five Norfolk business scooped wins in this year’s Good Food Awards 2022! Garden Kitchen Cafe on Hoveton Hall Estate (pictured) won in the Cafe category, Orford Plaice and Chish and Fips (not a typo) in Norwich both won in the Fish and Chips category, Sands Restaurant in Wells won in the Restaurant category and Bann Thai in Cromer won in the Takeaway category. That’s our next few meals out sorted, then!

Wildcraft Brewing

To wash down your award-winning food, why not try a gold standard beer? Two bevvies from Norwich-based Wildcraft Brewery were awarded gold at this year’s Craft Beer Awards 2021: their Wild Caribbean Pineapple IPA and their Wild Un-Bongo Mango NEIPA. Sounds like the perfect flavours to escape the blustery November weather and imagine you’re sipping beer on the beach to us!

The Ffolkes

If you’d rather drink out, then try one of the 100+ pubs in Norfolk that have been included in this year’s Good Beer Guide from CAMRA (that’s The Campaign for Real Ale to you and me). Big congrats to these pubs in particular for their first ever inclusions in the guide this year:

  • The New Entertainer, Gorleston
  • The Blackfriars Tavern, Great Yarmouth
  • California Tavern, Scratby
  • Lion, West Somerton
  • The White Hart, Ashill
  • The Ffolkes, Hillington (above)
  • The Wenn’s Chop and Ale House, King’s Lynn
  • Foldgate Inn, Stradsett
  • The Rosebery, Norwich
  • The Suffield Arms, Thorpe Market

New opening alert!

Cheese-lovers, grab your elasticated waist trousers and head to Hoveton tout suite to visit brand new restaurant Fizz & Fromage, which opened on Friday. The food menu includes everything from gourmet grilled cheese sandwiches to giant sharer fondues and cheesecake for dessert (obviously), and there’s a huge range of wines, bubbles and beers to pair with them. Lock-in, anyone?

Pop-up shop ’til you drop

Blakely

North Norfolk-based clothing brand Blakely is opening its first ever pop-up shop in Norwich this weekend, on Sat 20 Nov. Fans (of which there are many – peep the huge Instagram following!) will be able to shop their Red Label collection as well as some selected bestsellers.

Joules

If you’ve had your eye on a new pair of wellies or a winter coat from Joules, then this is the news you’ve been waiting for – their Big Sale is coming to Norfolk Showground on 9-11 December, which means you can get up to 70% off! You’ll need to book 1.5 hour slot for £5 that’s deducted from any purchases you make, and hours run from 9am-7pm – post-work Christmas shopping, here we come.

Animal magic

Oulton Broad Mini Zoo

Oulton Broad parents, rejoice! Pets Corner, aka Oulton Broad Mini Zoo, has reopened under its new owners and is now open every weekend from 10am to 3pm, with an aim to going full-time in Feb half term. You can expect to see everything from chickens to chinchillas and ponies to piglets, with a new rodent house, reptile house and wallaby enclosure in the works. Watch this space!

Photography: Laura Lake

Finally, it’s officially seal pup season at Horsey Beach! Mid to late November is peak time for pups, with as many as 2,500 predicted this year, so wrap up and head to the seaside if you want to catch a glimpse. Friends of Horsey Seals has a guide to how to watch safely, aka seal social distancing.
