Six of the best takeaway Sunday roasts

Prefer to be lounging on the sofa than scrubbing pots and pans this weekend? I hear you! Let's have a proper chef do the Sunday dinner for you then, shall we? Here's six of Muddy's favourite takeaway roasts from the best spots around Norfolk.

The Brisley Bell, Dereham

The Brisley Bell

Boasting a Michelin-trained head chef, the Brisley is proud to be a meat-lead pub, so you can expect some really decent cooking here. Choose from either roast beef sirlion with roasties, Yorkshire puds, gravy and all the trimmings, or salmon en croute with a lemon cream sauce or for veggies there’s giant Yorkshire pudding filled with onions, kalettes & melted raclette with new potatoes from this award-winning favourite. Pud is sticky toffee pudding or rasbperry cheesecake. Call 07931 817585 to order Tues – Sat between 12 – 2 Sunday collection between 12.15pm – 2.30pm (Main £15. Dessert £5).

The Wildebeest, Stoke Holy Cross

Priding itself on it’s lasting relationship with local suppliers, TW uses the finest seasonal ingredients and it’s Dine@Home menu tells you how to prep it all properly (phew). Roast fillet of Swannington beef is £26 and comes with an appetizer of Norfolk Crunch bread, alongside the fillet is Yorkshire pudding, beef fat roast potatoes, honey roasted carrots, broccoli, sauté savoy cabbage, beef gravy. Pud is Bramley apple crumble with vanilla custard. There’s also pan-roasted chicken breast (£22) with the same sides and a thyme butter, and chicken gravy. For Mother’s Day there’s a separate menu. To order call 01508 492497 48 hours before.

The Black Horse, Norwich

The Black Horse roast – get yours with a beer to go

This central city pub has had a great make-over in recent years and is looking sharp and welcoming for when we’re allowed to go, it’s on my list for catch up drinks. In the meantime, the roasts with all the trimmings of roasted carrots, red cabbage and HUGE yorkies look scrumptious, and there’s pigs in blankets – yum – from £12.50. For veggies there’s a spinach and red pepper polenta loaf and kids roasts from £8. Delivered within two miles of the pub, order your trad roast the day before by 6pm using the pub’s app on their facebook page or call 07522 065781. Get yourself a draught beer too and no need to get out of your PJs!

The Ber Street Kitchen, Norwich

Bring on SS21

Feeling hungry? Then newly opened BSK will tick all the boxes, with it’s generously portioned and amazingly priced Sunday lunches. Choose from local roast topside of beef with horseradish, roast loin of pork with stuffing and crackling, lamb shank with red wine and herbs, roast chicken, roast turkey, nut roast, stuffed Portobello mushroom and fish pie with black bomber mash – all served with seasonal veg, yorkie puds and roast potatoes, from £10.95 to £14.95. Book here or call 07914 717484 / 01603664400 9am-5pm weekdays.

Shambles North Walsham

Tucked away in North Walsham, this little bistro cafe is making it’s mark as a destination spot for those in search of decent grub and well made cocktails. We are headed over here as soon as lockdown part 2 ends! In the meantime, their Sunday dine at home roasts look impressive. Choose from rib of beef, guinea fowl, nut roast and a special, all served with crispy roast potatoes, roasted veg, cauliflower cheese (a Muddy must have) and home-made gravy, plus there’s salmon on croute for a fish option. Puds are bold belly fillers perfect for that Sunday slob; sticky toffee pudding, cheesecake, chocolate brownie and treacle tart. Mmmmm. Get your orders in by 5pm the day before.

The Boars, Wymondham

This is one for the Muddy must-visit list. The Boars is run by former Elm Hill Brasserie chef Simon Turner, who after living in France is classically influenced but self-taught. Simon’s skill in the kitchen is obvious – each plate is beautifully curated and mouthwateringly fresh, with attention to quality local ingredients and the focus is on sharing. Sunday roasts include whole roast chickens (small/large) at £30/£45, rack of lamb to share is £38, and roast loin of pork is £13 pp. Puds (choc and hazelnut brownie) and small dishes (crispy squid with Aoili / baked Camembert) are also available from £5. Order a takeaway call the pub or WhatsApp Simon: 01953 605851 / 07891 706276.
