Whelk Coppers Tea Rooms, Sheringham
Overlooking the sea in traditional Sheringham, this historic wood panelled tearoom with sunny outdoor seating serves delicious cakes, great breakfasts and an appealing kids' menu.
The North Norfolk Coast is an Area of Outstanding Natural Beauty which means it’s actually not that easy to find good places to eat overlooking the sea. So let’s hear it for the Whelk Coppers Tea Rooms which has a rare location where you can sip good coffee and keep a weather eye on the waves.
We love the quirky building, originally fishermen’s cottages, now panelled in Indian Teak from a Royal Navy Frigate built in Calcutta in 1820. And, get this, the showy wrought iron gates were, allegedly, designed by Walt Disney, who was a friend of the original owner. Hakuna Matata!
So what about the food? It’s a family run café with a strong belief in keeping things local and fresh so they’re well in with the local baker, butcher, greengrocer and fishmonger, a local jam company, piemaker and er…sausage roller. Even the ice cream is made just down the road in Sheringham. And the breakfasts are lovely, outside in summer (they have blankets for breezy days) or by the woodburner on a winter morning with a big artisan coffee. Dogs are welcome too and have their own treats on offer. Furbaby heaven. Kids are also well looked after with a simple, appealing menu of sandwiches and babyccinos etc.
The delicious cakes and scones are all homemade and baked in house by the staff and have a range of gluten free and dairy free and vegan versions you don’t necessarily expect from a little seaside tearoom. We appreciate it!
It’s a pretty special spot to watch the sun go down, so keep watch on their socials for sell-out themed dinner nights.
