The Dairy Barns, Hickling
Muddy Says: The Deane family have turned their milking sheds into a beautiful boutique holiday stay offering B&B, self catering cottages and a rustic barn for events. With the homely touch and a gentle smattering of luxury this will appeal to couples, families and groups looking for a country break away.
The Dairy Barns are situated in 360 acres of beautiful rural farmland, only a few miles from the beaches of Sea Palling, Waxham and Horsey. From the exterior they look like part of a traditional working farm, in fact they are – you can’t miss the neighbouring Highland cattle!
Accommodation comprises six cosy en-suite rooms, three extra special rooms split over two levels with private gardens and three self catering cottages which can sleep from 2 to 12 people. Dune View and Willow Farm Cottage have a secret adjoining door allowing the cottages to be used as one large house.
The split level rooms are perfect for families as you have a separate living area upstairs, giving parents the space to relax once the kids have gone to bed. They also have a small kitchen, great for a little self catering and I loved the fact that the owner Hannah is happy to squeeze another small child in upon request.
Small touches make all the difference – a good selection of magazines, choccies on the pillow and beautiful fresh flowers (Hannah also used to be a florist) plus little nods to the farm’s heritage with contemporary cow art on the walls.
For the B&B guests there’s a snug lounge with a selection of good books, board games, wine glasses and a corkscrew – perfect for an evening or a rainy day! There’s also an enclosed garden and a large courtyard with garden games for everyone to enjoy.
The hearty farmhouse breakfast is worthy of note – it’s freshly prepared with local produce and served in the beautiful main barn. I’d missed brekkie the morning I popped up to view The Barns and was given the most delicious granola bake. Secret recipe apparently – Damn!!
Talking of food, they also offer a wide range of catering options including intimate dinner parties, buffets, BBQ’s and hog roasts. The afternoon tea menu is particularly popular!
The Barns are perfect for the idyllic country style wedding and can cater for 70-100 guests. The Old Cattle Yard turns into an outdoor dance floor at night complete with straw bales, fairy lights, blankets and those endless Norfolk skies. Read more in our National guide to wedding venues.
