Re.Source General Store and Café, Norwich
Laid-back plant-based café above a beautiful low-impact general store. Super fresh with brilliant local suppliers. Pavement seating for watching the world go by.
You know the way David Attenborough manages to make us think a lot harder about what the hell we’re doing, and yet at the same time be reassuringly soothing? Well, if he ran a café it would be Re.source.
Because, hey, we are totally here for the good intentions. But who even has time to read a hundred labels? People of Norwich, ditch the eco-anxiety, because Re.Source has done it all for you.
They’re a family-run, low-impact general store and café in the heart of Norwich. 100% vegan and everything from their own kitchen is gluten free and made with zero refined sugar (although if that matters to you, do check, as some goods are from other suppliers).
But it’s not only about what we put in our lovely curvy bellies, it’s about what we chuck out. And Re.source are one of the first ‘zero-waste’ cafés in the country, running a kitchen that doesn’t use a bin. Huh? They don’t need one because there’s NO plastic. All the milks, butters, breads, cakes and fudge are made on the premises, or nearby, and food waste is composted or popped into wormeries and given back to the land. The circle of life in action.
Um, so it’s all a bit woo? Not at all, it’s eminently practical. And, when it comes to the food, totally delicious.
Got it. OK, we’re in. But what do they actually serve? It varies, but expect delicious cashew cheeses from Nuts About Cheese (wrapped in paper) or fresh sorrel pesto made with leaves grown two miles away, delivered by bike and spread on bread warm from the oven. Or pinwheel pastries flecked with hedgerow herbs, juicy (vegan) sausage rolls, buddha bowls and soups of hearty goodness, sticky plum cake, ridiculously decadent brownies, little fudgey chocolate pyramids, refreshing tea and painstakingly sourced ethical coffee from a classic French press.
The menu changes every day, it’s super healthy, therapeutically short, blissfully simple and, weirdly, feels incredibly indulgent. Who knew? Turns out looking after yourself is actually one of life’s greatest pleasures. Right, that’s the soul food sorted. Now let’s get on with saving the world…
