Delightful French bistro in the heart of the Norwich Lanes. Simple, authentic French food perfectly cooked. A gem of a place for a romantic lunch (or dinner) à deux.
Husband and wife team Thomas Aubrit and Gemma Aubrit-Layfield fulfilled a lifelong dream by opening their French Bistro in trendy Norwich Lanes at the start of 2020. We all know that was a hellish year for restaurants but dreams are powerful things. This gorgeous little piece of France had already won a passionate following when the string of lockdowns hit, so we really hope it’s here to stay because L’Hexagone is a very special little place indeed.
L’Hexagone is the French nickname for France (the country’s shape). And Norwich is the richer for having its own delicious outpost of Paris here in The Fine City. The menu is joyously simple and the food’s a beautiful expression of authentic French classics, perfectly cooked.
We rate the Saint Jacques Poêlées (scallops) on creamy celeriac purée and totally fantastic Steak Frites. And challenge you to choose between the satisfying crack of a Crème Brûlée and glorious Mousse au Chocolat. And order the Assiette de Fromages as well. Why wouldn’t you? Gemma’s welcome is the warmest around, and this couple (with their two young children) are a great team. As ever with food, there’s history…Thomas’s mother was a cook and his uncle a butcher. We want to give a special mention to his Soupe a L’Oignon, a tribute to his beloved grandmother’s cooking (clearly superb). He’s done her proud.
Oh – we also love the way the website is in perfect Franglais. ‘Open for Déjeuner and Dîner’. Makes our increasingly eccentric O-Level French feel extremely bienvenue.
Vive la France!
