Heydon Village Tea Room
24 miles north west of Norwich this very pretty tearoom sits on the green in the quintessential Norfolk village. Truly scrumptious for sunny picnic.
On the village green in the gorgeous conservation area of Heydon is the quintessential English tearoom. It’s covered in tumbling pink roses and serves sweet treats worth a journey. The area is often used as a film location – most recently Kenneth Branagh was spotted peeking in the antique shop window on a break from being Boris Johnson.
Poor old Sir Ken, he was here in lockdown which means he missed some of the best tea and cake around. The Afternoon Teas here are just lovely.
What is it about cutting sandwiches into nice, neat rectangles that instantly makes everything tastes extra delicious? The fillings are simple classics like mature cheese, egg mayo or local smoked ham and mustard etc made with the best local produce. Yes, there is thinly sliced cucumber too and fat, meaty little sausage rolls. We love the scones which, as well as plain, fruit or cheese, come warm in a lavender or fig and apricot version. So good. Obviously there’s jam and clotted cream (or cream cheese with a red pepper and tomato jam for the cheesy ones). And there are super fresh, light lunches too.
Oh, you wanted to know about the cakes? Very wise because alongside the tea time faves Victoria Sponge or fruit Bakewells, there’s ridiculously rich Chocolate Guinness Cake and heavenly Hummingbird Cake – banana, pineapple and pecan – totally tropical! And a changing menu of scrumptious sponges, tealoaves and polenta cakes flavoured with zesty lemon, warm ginger, Earl Grey, Pistachio, Coffee, caramel and walnut, white chocolate and fresh raspberries, orange, passionfruit…and more. We have a particular affection for ‘My Nan’s Fruit Cake’. There are days when you’re hungry for the spicy nostalgia of someone baking a bit of love into the afternoon. And there’s a whole lot of family magic in this incredibly welcoming kitchen.
There are various teas and coffees with lush Norfolk Cordials and Breckland Orchard’s Posh Pops for drinks. Plus gluten free, vegan and vegetarian food options too. And a Prosecco option for those sticking resolutely to an Absolutely Fabulous diet. Sweetie, someone’s gotta do it.
Afternoon Tea is £20 per person or £26 if you include a glass of Prosecco.
£5 deposit payable per person to confirm all afternoon tea bookings, which is fully refundable with at least 24 hours notice on cancellations.
Note: It’s worth making time to stroll about in Heydon because this small village is also home to The Earle Arms (a candlelit pub with an old school countryman’s vibe), artisan florist, Avocet Antique Shop, Moochi Modo gift, clothing and interiors studio, Beauty Barn and Hair Salon. And lounging about on the village green with stone baked pizzas from Husk is a local Friday night essential in summer. Visitors are welcome to wander in the historic park too, but the Hall is a private family home, built in grand Elizabethan style. If you can’t find a backdrop to enhance your gram here, frankly you’re beyond help.
