Erpingham House, Norwich

100% plant-based, plastic-free & mostly gluten-free, this is a stylish (and very photogenic) addition to the buzzing Norwich vegan scene.

Weekend Escapes

Erpingham House is 100% plant-based, plastic-free & mostly gluten-free and, most importantly, the food is utterly delicious and a proper voyage of discovery. It’s so pretty too. As is the interior of this rather lovely Grade 2 Listed building in the heart of Norwich’s historic Tombland (once a Viking market place), just next to the beautiful cathedral.

Founder Loui Blake wanted to offer Norwich the same foods & drinks he’d fallen in love with on his travels and give more people the opportunity to learn about plant-based foods in a cool, creative space. Sustainable, health conscious, but also completely indulgent it’s no surprise to us Erpingham House is a favourite with Norwich’s environmentally aware population (voted one of the UK’s most climate friendly cities by Friends of the Earth). Teens love it too – not least for the lush cocktails and pink blossom framed doorway – perfect for an uber cool 18th birthday treat.

Erpingham House is a local business, built by local people, with Norwich-based designers Berry’s & Grey designing the highly Instagrammable interior (check out the gorgeous floral wall and jungle of house plants). Head Chef Meg Greenacre created the menu and the restaurant’s in the joint ownership of local family & friends, including former Norwich city footballers Russell Martin & Declan Rudd. There is a cousin restaurant, run on similar terms, in Brighton.

We love the Fish ‘N’ Chips with minty chilli peas and the epic Sunday Nut and Seitan roasts. For adventurous kids, Chipotle Macaroni Cheese with Almond Parmesan (£6.00) has a pleasing nutty taste and perfectly comforting creaminess. If you’re in for a late breakfast, Muddy loves an Iced Smoothie Bowl (£6.50) with banana, peanut butter, berries, orange syrup, cocoa soil and petals. Just looking at it does you good and it tastes divine.

They do takeaways too, via collection or Deliveroo if you’re in the city.
