Biddy’s Tearoom, Aylsham and Norwich

Quirky tearoom with immense portions of cake from the in-house bakery and over 50 kinds of tea with mismatched plates, cups and pots. An eccentric gem in the central Norwich Lanes with a smaller branch off Aylsham's market square.

Weekend Escapes

Biddy’s is an independent Victorian-inspired tea house in Norfolk, named after the owner’s dog. The cakes are to die for and the whole atmosphere has more than a touch of comfortably shabby magic. It’s the kind of place you can imagine Harry, Ron and Hermione settling into a cosy corner on a rainy afternoon or hearing an outing from Malory Towers giggling upstairs. On a quiet morning, you feel you might spy Sherlock deducing things over a pot of Darjeeling. (Ah, Benedict, we’ve been expecting you…)

If you’ve always wondered exactly what ‘High Tea’ means, book in and find out. This ain’t no fancy pants Frenchified place, this is a cake lover’s wonderland, chock-full of the kind of portions that make hockey teams jolly and stuff the mouths of ravenous boys in grass stained cricket sweaters.

Roald Dahl said “There is something about very cold weather that gives one an enormous appetite.” He’d have loved the literary Englishness of Biddy’s and so do we.

There are over 50 blends of tea and all the cakes are deliciously homemade at the in-house bakery. Special occasion cakes are spectacularly good and there’s a studio to host workshops plus a sister company dedicated to making stunning wedding creations.

There are two branches, a small one just off the market square in Aylsham, with a dog friendly zone and a quaint little courtyard, and the larger OG is tucked into the shadows of Norwich’s eclectic city centre lanes.

For a beautifully eccentric party, Biddy’s can host one of their famous Mad Hatter’s Tea Parties most evenings in either the Norwich or Aylsham branch. It’s after hours, so you have private hire and, we love this, you also have a dressing up box of vintage hats as well as a selection of bygone parlour games for full on Victorian hilarity.
