Do you have a phone full of terrible family selfies? Check out my gorgeous family shoot with life style photographer Hannah Betts!
It wasn’t magic really, she just did THE most amazing job. Only a tiny bit of photo shopping of a spot, I didn’t want to let the side down!
We live in a world of beautiful imagery, indeed a whole social network has developed around it. I’m used to swiping through Instagram daily and just sometimes I’ll pause for longer than a nano second on a picture. That’s exactly what happened when I saw a friend’s family pictures recently – I paused and wanted to know who took them.
I started to flick through the hundreds of photos on my phone and see if I could find a nice family shot. I had plenty of the Mudlings and few of me and Mr O but the group photos always seem forced or someone would be pulling a funny face or looking in the wrong direction.
It made me feel a little sad that I hadn’t captured us together as a unit and that in years to come this would leave a sad little hole in our history. Pause for dramatic effect and enough justification to indulgently embark on this family photograph exercise.
From the off, the very talented Hannah Betts put me at ease as we discussed outdoor locations where we would all feel comfortable. We opted for Mousehold Heath as we regularly walk the dogs on the heath and have lots of happy memories.
Luckily the sun was shining which created a beautiful autumnal backdrop. Hannah was amazingly unobtrusive, shooting us from a distance, only occasionally giving us some gentle direction when necessary, or suggesting a set-up.
A self taught photographer, Hannah started taking wedding pictures for friends and developed her photography skills alongside being a full time teacher. Now it all becomes clear and I totally understand how she was able to cajole us for two hours and smile through out!
In 2014, she turned from amateur (with an amazing eye) to professional and launched Hannah Betts Photography. Hannah charges £200 for the shoot (up to three hours) and you receive a full copy of all the images from the day.
I would thoroughly recommend it as a fun family activity. Despite the pre-teen wardrobe dramas beforehand, we all had great fun and it was often the moments of us laughing at each other where the best pictures emerged.
I’m over the moon with the pictures – even the ones with me in them! Christmas presents anyone …..
