On your marks, get set, and go! Fancy challenging yourself in the new year? Then get booking onto these Norfolk races and triathlons. Lace up your trainers, take a breath, and dig deep.
Norwich Triathlon, 26 June
Held in the stunning Whitlingham Country Park with the swim taking place in the open waters of Whitlingham Broad, this tri is ideal for first-timers as the route is fairly flat (the advantages of Norfolk!). There are both Sprint distances and Standard distances available, with a relay option for the Standard distance. Costs start at £44.
Outlaw Half Holkham, Wells-next-the-Sea, 3 July
18th century Holkham Hall serves as the beautiful backdrop for one of the UK’s most popular events. The 1.2 mile swim is a single loop in Holkham’s private lake, followed by 56 miles of undulating country and coastal road for the bike course. The 13.1 mile run finishes around the estate, where the scenery is sure to give you a boost. Costs start at £215.
This one-way flat course takes place on a disused railway with minimal interaction with traffic (ideal if you prefer to steer clear of roads). The marathon starts at Wensum Community Centre and joins the half at Whitwell Station, with both races ending at Aylsham town hall. Costs start at £28.
Spring Blickling Half Marathon, Aylsham, 20 March
Blickling’s off-road Spring event starts and finishes in front of the Hall itself (excellent for pre and post-race selfies), and the route takes in both the estate’s grounds and many sturdy off-road paths. Prefer road running? Try the Autumn event instead, which takes place on 16 October. Costs start at £26.90.
Bungay Festival of Running, Ditchingham, 10 April
More race options than you can shake a trainer sock at here, including a marathon and half, a 10k and 5k, and a fun run. Costs start at £38 for the marathon, which is a double loop through the scenic Waveney Valley.
Run Sandringham, 19 June
As her Maj isn’t using it during the Summer, it’s a great opportunity to pound the paths around the Sandringham Estate for this popular running event. As well as a half marathon, there’s also a 5k and community mile on the same day. Costs start at £25.90 for the half.
Norfolk Coastal Trail Marathon and Half Marathon, 24 September
This route follows a beautiful stretch of the north Norfolk coastline. The marathon will starts at Holme Next The Sea, and the half marathon joins at Burnham Overy Staithe, with both races finishing at Morston Quay. Costs start at £28.
Norfolk Gazelles Valentine’s 10k, Norwich, 6 February
This course starts and ends at Easton College, and takes in a variety of both paved and country roads. We can’t think of anything more romantic…
GEAR 10k, King’s Lynn, 1 May
This is a popular town-centre course that takes in plenty of local landmarks as well as the River Ouse pathway and The Walks. It often sells out thanks to the simplicity of the route, so if you fancy giving it a go, get in there quick. Costs start at £24.40.
Aylsham 10k, 8 May
The first organised race of the Aylsham Runners, this road race is ideal for beginners thanks to the quiet country route and relaxed club environment. Costs start at £16.
Holt 10k, 29 May
This mostly flat course starts and ends in the grounds of the prestigious Gresham School, and makes the most of the beautiful North Norfolk scenery with a mixture of road and trail. Costs start at £15.
Harling 10k, 10 July
The first half of this route takes place on relatively flat road from East Harling to Bridgham, before speeding through a forest section between 5k and 8k and then returning to the road. Costs start at £15.
Run Norwich, 17 July
This city-centre route passes landmarks such as Norwich Castle, The Forum, Norwich Cathedral and Norwich City Football Club, and is well-known for its excellent atmosphere (even if the weather doesn’t play ball). Costs start at £24.
Run Sandringham 10k, 25 September
Hit the grounds of Sandringham Estate for this scenic 10k, which stretches through some of the most picturesque countryside in the county. Costs start at £21.
Inflatable 5k Norfolk, Norfolk Showground, 7 May
One for the whole family, this is essentially bouncy castle-meets-workout, with four different distances to choose from (2.5k, 5k, 10k, 15k). Costs start at £18.
The Broads Walk Challenge, 11 June
If you’re a non-runner but fancy a challenge, this event offers three distances (90k, 50k and 25k) around the National Park, all taking in fantastic river views and nature trails before ending in Acle. Costs start at £39 for the 25k.
Colour 5k Norwich, Hoveton Hall, 9 July
Finally, a race that’ll leave you red in the face for the right reasons! Set in Hoveton Hall Gardens, this fun run sees you being pelted with a different colour for every kilometre you run or walks. As well as the titular 5k, there’s also a mini 1k course for littlies, and a new 3k course for 2022. Adults cost £23.50, juniors costs £16.
X Adventure Race, Horsford, 3-4 September
Team up with two or three willing friends for this 1.5km obstacle course, which sees you crawling through mud, crossing a lake on an improvised raft and scaling walls. Costs start at £88.80 for a team of three.
