Commit to fit: 2022 races to train for now

On your marks, get set, and go! Fancy challenging yourself in the new year? Then get booking onto these Norfolk races and triathlons. Lace up your trainers, take a breath, and dig deep.

TRIATHLONS

Norwich Triathlon, 26 June

Held in the stunning Whitlingham Country Park with the swim taking place in the open waters of Whitlingham Broad, this tri is ideal for first-timers as the route is fairly flat (the advantages of Norfolk!). There are both Sprint distances and Standard distances available, with a relay option for the Standard distance. Costs start at £44.

Outlaw Half Holkham, Wells-next-the-Sea, 3 July

18th century Holkham Hall serves as the beautiful backdrop for one of the UK’s most popular events. The 1.2 mile swim is a single loop in Holkham’s private lake, followed by 56 miles of undulating country and coastal road for the bike course. The 13.1 mile run finishes around the estate, where the scenery is sure to give you a boost. Costs start at £215.

MARATHONS

Marriott’s Way Trail Marathon and Half Marathon, Norwich

This one-way flat course takes place on a disused railway with minimal interaction with traffic (ideal if you prefer to steer clear of roads). The marathon starts at Wensum Community Centre and joins the half at Whitwell Station, with both races ending at Aylsham town hall. Costs start at £28.

Spring Blickling Half Marathon, Aylsham, 20 March

Blickling’s off-road Spring event starts and finishes in front of the Hall itself (excellent for pre and post-race selfies), and the route takes in both the estate’s grounds and many sturdy off-road paths. Prefer road running? Try the Autumn event instead, which takes place on 16 October. Costs start at £26.90.

Bungay Festival of Running, Ditchingham, 10 April

More race options than you can shake a trainer sock at here, including a marathon and half, a 10k and 5k, and a fun run. Costs start at £38 for the marathon, which is a double loop through the scenic Waveney Valley.

Run Sandringham, 19 June

As her Maj isn’t using it during the Summer, it’s a great opportunity to pound the paths around the Sandringham Estate for this popular running event. As well as a half marathon, there’s also a 5k and community mile on the same day. Costs start at £25.90 for the half.

Norfolk Coastal Trail Marathon and Half Marathon, 24 September

10K

Norfolk Gazelles Valentine’s 10k, Norwich, 6 February

This course starts and ends at Easton College, and takes in a variety of both paved and country roads. We can’t think of anything more romantic…

GEAR 10k, King’s Lynn, 1 May

This is a popular town-centre course that takes in plenty of local landmarks as well as the River Ouse pathway and The Walks. It often sells out thanks to the simplicity of the route, so if you fancy giving it a go, get in there quick. Costs start at £24.40.

Aylsham 10k, 8 May

The first organised race of the Aylsham Runners, this road race is ideal for beginners thanks to the quiet country route and relaxed club environment. Costs start at £16.

Run Norwich, 17 July

This city-centre route passes landmarks such as Norwich Castle, The Forum, Norwich Cathedral and Norwich City Football Club, and is well-known for its excellent atmosphere (even if the weather doesn’t play ball). Costs start at £24.

Run Sandringham 10k, 25 September

Hit the grounds of Sandringham Estate for this scenic 10k, which stretches through some of the most picturesque countryside in the county. Costs start at £21.

Colour 5k Norwich, Hoveton Hall, 9 July

Finally, a race that’ll leave you red in the face for the right reasons! Set in Hoveton Hall Gardens, this fun run sees you being pelted with a different colour for every kilometre you run or walks. As well as the titular 5k, there’s also a mini 1k course for littlies, and a new 3k course for 2022. Adults cost £23.50, juniors costs £16.
