Need a sugar fix?

Look no further than these local places who are all providing socially-distanced and responsible options. Calories, be damned!

If nothing else, lockdown has given us a reason to spoil ourselves, and the ultimate lockdown mood-booster has to be something scrummy from one of Norfolk’s independent sweet treats boutiques!

The Sweet Kitchen

The Sweet Kitchen started life as school enterprise project by two ambitous 17 year olds. But in response to the current COVID 19 situation and lucky for us, it’s become a reality. Bringing a little bit of sweet relief, their most popular fudge based treat is is the ‘Glitter Block’ which sounds very muddy – LOVE LOVE LOVE! Give these two young girls your support and treat someone special (or yourself) to a bag/box of scrumptious flavoured fudge starting from £3. If you need anymore temptation check out their insta grid. @thesweet_kitchen

cupcake sweet treats

Cupcake & Co are determined to continue providing cakes for all their loyal customers who have been purchasing their products over the years – so it would be downright rude if we didn’t support their efforts in return! They’re offering a delivery service in Norwich on Saturdays, and collection from their premises on St Giles on Wednesdays and Saturdays between 12pm and 2pm too. Orders have to be placed in advance, and lists of all their available products are regularly updated on their website, so grab a box of freshly-baked brownies, cupcakes or doughnuts and stock up on treats for the whole of the week!

Pull up a table and chair in the garden and indulge in a little bit of escapism with an afternoon tea order from Norfolk Mead Hotel. With both collection and delivery available – and the option to add a little cheeky liquid refreshment to wash all your scrumptious savouries and sweets down too – you can relax in the sunshine and while the afternoon away. Cheers!

Even before lockdown, Simply Cake Co. were sending deliveries of brownies and traybakes directly into letterboxes around the country, so there’s no excuse now not to place an order (you’ll just have to sit on the doormat and wait instead of chasing the postman down the road). Everything is handmade from the finest local Norfolk ingredients, with top-quality Belgian chocolate thrown in to the mix too. They have a dedicated vegan section to their online shop, and as gift-wrapping and personalisation is free, it’s the perfect way to send a gift of gooey goodness to someone who needs a treat. Just make sure you’re online at 12pm on the dot: they close for orders once capacity’s reached, and you don’t want to miss out!

Two Magpies Bakery in Norwich has all bases covered: not only can you click and collect their cakes, breads, pizzas and pastries, but if you’ve caught the baking bug during lockdown, they’ve put a selection of their favourite recipes online for you to try out at home. If you’re struggling to find flour and other essentials, fear not – they even provide the baking kits – but we’re sure we’ll be pressing the ‘add to cart’ button on the finished articles too…

Get continental with your sugar hit by indulging in a delivery from Churros & Chorizo – they’re delivering on Friday and Saturday evenings across selected postcodes in Norwich. Fans of this Spanish street-food provider will also be happy to hear that their savoury dishes are also still on the menu, so whether you’re in the mood to graze away on a selection of tasty tapas or pile into a perfect paella, there’ll be something to tickle your fancy. Just make sure you leave room for those famous churros for dessert!

Heydon Village Tea Shop has to be one of Norfolk’s quaintest tearooms – but if you can’t pay them a visit, they’ll come to you! Order in advance to secure your Saturday collection or delivery slot and choose from traditional favourites such as Raspberry & Apricot Bakewell or Lavender Scones (with clotted cream and preserve, of course). If it’s a special occasion – or even if it’s not! – you can go all-out and order their award-winning afternoon tea too. Prosecco and cake? That sounds like a winner to me!

Some egg-cellent news for cake lovers: Annabel’s Hen House is open for collections! Browse through choices that include scones, brownies, cakes and shortbread and head over to Wymondham to pick up your homemade delights that are fresh from the oven. Everything is baked using the finest ingredients, and their own free-range eggs from The Egg Shed, so you can support both of their businesses in one go. What more of a reason do you need to pay them a visit?

We couldn’t write an article about sweet treats without mentioning Figbar, Norwich’s premier dessert destination and in our time of need, they haven’t forgotten about us either. These incredible afternoon teas are available for delivery to Norwich residents, and as their menu changes on a weekly basis, there’s no excuse not to order more than once. Place your advance orders through their sister business at Salt and then wait for these delectable delights to turn up on your doorstep. Maybe staying at home won’t be that much of a struggle, after all….
