Superflashy Food & Fashion Newsflash
A rose-tinted cake lovers' dream, a gorgeous Norwich lifestyle store plus rumours of a brand new Cookery School...Here's the scoop on fantastic new Norfolk indie businesses to meet and love.
So while you’re voting your socks off in the Muddy Awards a gang of brand new kids are moving into the block. We reckon they’re already contenders for next year’s Awards, and heaven knows it’s a roller coaster launching a new venture these days, so get in there and let’s help these fab fledgings fly!
SHERINGHAM – For the love of cake
It’s any colour so long as it’s pink at Winibees super cute cakery in Sheringham. Megan used to look after the kitchen at Soho’s Hummingbird Bakery, Jimmy’s a musician and ‘Winibees’ is a delicious blend of their children’s names. SO sweet! Try the signature luscious red velvet cupcakes and a box of Biscoff-crammed cookies. Gluten free and vegan options every day too. Crumbs!
WELLS-NEXT THE SEA – A sailor’s coffee for me!
Will’s of Wells launched a couple of months before the run of lockdown storms hit, so we’re delighted to see the doors are open, the Mörk hot chocolate’s luxurious and the coffee (from Grey Seal) is so rich and smooth you’d marry it. The shop’s like a shipshape little boat, we can imagine snuggling up here when the summer crowds sail away. You’ll find Will’s under the old gantry!
HOLT: Star attractions
Heading inland to Holt, Starplains Stores is a must-visit. Founder Tom’s just put in new decking so you can dawdle outside. A sign on the wall reads simply ‘CHEESE, WINE, COFFEE’. Pretty much my staple diet. Essentially, this is your dream pantry, a beautifully curated mix of incredible local and international foodie delights. Right next door Tom’s partner Nik will soon be opening Grace & Thorn Home, a plant and lifestyle offshoot of Grace & Thorn on Hackney Road. We can’t wait to see what this gloriously offbeat flower stylist will bring. Wine and flowers…sounds like the future’s Rosé.
NORWICH: The place between
Some dreams just kind of fall into place. A few months ago friends Sarah Brown of Harwood Clothing and Bonnie Dornan of Studio Adorn joked about one day setting up shop together – and on 2 July they opened the doors of Atwin Store, in the Norwich Lanes. What a totally lovely place! ‘Atwin’ is Norfolk dialect for ‘between’, perfect for a lifestyle store with its heart and soul in Norfolk’s vibrant community of indie makers and designers. You’ll find local talent like The Chemist’s Daughter, Sop. cosmetics and Form Norfolk handmade jewellery, alongside like-minded contemporary brands such as London’s Guardi. Considered clothing, long conversations, heartfelt connections, Atwin Store is creating space for good things that last a lifetime.
AYLSHAM: Sweet dreams are made of cheese
Aylsham’s Hodson & Co Cheese Room is all kinds of wonderful so when chef/cheese maestro Charlie launched Table for Two it was bound to be insanely popular. This tiny weekly supper club gives just two people a joyously bespoke gourmand experience with Charlie as personal chef and complementary wines perfectly chosen by Tanja Wright of North Norfolk’s TFW Fine Wines. Plus a few surprises…FOMO? Well listen up! Because Charlie and co are ripening all kinds of new plans to share the foodie love, including whispers of a Cookery and Cheese school. OMG!
And so to bed…
Up for it but live over the county line? Be among the first to book a stay at the Ironmongers, opening soon in Aylsham. This beautiful Elizabethan townhouse tells stories through its architecture, reflected in 8 magnificent bedrooms, each a tribute to the trades of the market square it overlooks. With smart self check-in & contemporary chic styling, this gorgeous bridge to the past is bang up to date. And it’s 30 seconds walk from Hodson’s so when that Cookery School takes off…let’s just say we’ll keep you posted.
