5 pubs with great beer gardens

You’d be right in thinking that city pubs don’t tend to have good beer gardens – space generally being at a premium – but in Norwich, that couldn’t be further from the truth. From riverside gastropubs to real ale spots, the city has some great places for al fresco drinking. So, in celebration of summer being around the corner, I’ve rounded up the top 5 places to sip in the sun (you’re welcome).

The Eagle:
This pretty Georgian-style pub boasts a larger-than-average tree-lined beer garden with a children’s play area and climbing frame. Ideal for a relaxed family get-together, there are tables under cover, an outdoor barbecue and a bustling, friendly atmosphere. Try the roasts on a Sunday – they are legendary.

The Georgian Townhouse:
This handsome pub-cum-restaurant-cum-boutique hotel is a good choice for gin lovers with over 60 of the juniper-infused tipples to choose from. Picnic tables cover the large lawn which has a herb garden, a croquette lawn, a children’s play area and a great view of Norwich Cathedral. In the summer months, expect to find flame grilled and spit-roasted meat on offer, courtesy of the big outdoor barbecue.

The Norwich Playhouse:
A popular spot with students, the higgeldy-piggeldy outdoor courtyard of the Playhouse offers seating on two levels, some with views of the river. Multi-coloured picnic tables match strings of colourful light bulbs above, while summer is met with barbecues and pop-up food events, making it easy to stay until the sun goes down. The Playhouse itself hosts an eclectic mix of theatre and live music.

The York Tavern:
The beer garden of this lively Golden Triangle pub is surprisingly large and warm (it gets the sun for most of the day), with picnic tables and plenty of space for energetic kids to run around. In addition to a well stocked bar, there is a delicious food menu – non-meat eaters will love the halloumi burger with chargrilled pepper, courgette and fresh pesto.

The Garden House:
Probably the best known beer garden in the Golden Triangle, The Garden House has a large outdoor area with plenty of bistro seating and an attractive water feature in the corner. The outdoor barbecue is fired up in the summer months, serving home-smoked meat and great burgers, while the bar serves six real ales as well as a good choice of wine. Dog and child-friendly, you’ll soon be chatting to the people on the bench opposite you.
