Here's our pick of the best outdoor cinema and theatre across the county this summer.

So here’s the thing – you’re feeling like a lazy night in front of the telly but the weather’s far too nice to be stuck indoors. Tah Dah! We’ve found some very big outdoor screens and stages in some pretty gorgeous locations for a perfect chilled night ‘out’ – enjoy!

 

Treasure Island Outdoor Theatre, Lynford Hall, Mundford, Thurs 18th July 

This is a beautiful location for outdoor theatre and this fun production by the Chapterhouse Theatre Company is suitable for all the family. BBQ and refreshments available (no picnics) and seating is provided. If it rains – the event will be held indoors, so no need for raincoats and brollies!

Outdoor Cinema, Plantation Gardens, Thurs 18th July – Sun 21st July & Thurs 15th August – Sun 18th August 

Picturehouse Outdoor Cinema is back at the beautiful Plantation Gardens for two long weekends of great flicks. Loving the choice of The Rocky Horror Picture Show and Jurassic Park. Plus, if you’re the only person alive not to have seen it – singalong to The Greatest Showman. Full list of screenings is available here.

Outdoor Cinema, Hockwold Hall, Fri 19th July – Fri 23rd August

Hockwold Hall is having an ultimate 80’s throwback through July and August. Take your pick from cinema classics including the original Ghostbusters on Fri 19th July, Dirty Dancing on Sat 20th of July and Back to the Future on Sunday 11th August. Full list of screenings is available here.

Outdoor Theatre – A Midsummer Night’s Dream, Thurning Hall Sat 20th July

This production seems to be a popular choice for theatre companies across Norfolk this summer, so here’s our favourite venue choice. Can’t think of a more magical place to watch this production than within the walled gardens at Thurning Hall. Food, vendors, licensed bar – just bring your own chair!

Outdoor Theatre – My First Play: A Midsummer Night’s Nap, The Garage, Norwich, Sat 20th July to Sun 4th August

Fancy introducing your little ones to Shakespeare? This immersive 50 minute production by All-In Production is aimed at 0-7 year olds and families. Don’t worry about boisterous ‘Mudlings’ – they are actively encouraged to get involved and make noise. Phew!

If you’re not familiar with this magical Shakespeare comedy – it’s the story of naughty fairies, broken love and a group of awful actors getting ready to put on their play when their lead actor is turned into a donkey. What could possibly go wrong?

Outdoor Theatre – As You Like It, Mannington Hall, Fri 16th August

Al fresco summer theatre in the gorgeous moated gardens of Mannington Hall, performed by outdoor theatre specialists Rain or Shine theatre company. This Shakespearean comedy is ideal for the whole family, so pack your picnic, rugs and get the bubbles on ice.

Book Tickets – £6 for children up to 15 and £13 for adults (with £11 concession)

 

Outdoor Theatre – Sense and Sensibility, Hoveton Hall, Sun 11th August 

A new adaptation of this Austen novel is coming to Hoveton Hall in August, performed by the Essex based DOT production company. Their previous performances have had totally glowing reviews, and combined with DOT’s signature comedic style it’s not to be missed.

Outdoor Theatre – Jungle Book, Sun 21st July – Sun 18th August

East Anglian theatre company Strange Fascination will be touring their production of the Jungle Book to several venues around Norfolk, including The Grove Hotel, Cromer on Sun 21st August and Bungay Castle on Sat 27th and Sun 28th July. We went last year to see one of their productions at Woodfordes Brewery and the kids loved it!! Click here to find the performance closest to you.

Outdoor Cinema – Pop-Up Pictures, Catton Park, Thurs 22nd – Sun 25th August

On the flip side to the modern music dramas shown at Waterloo Park earlier in the summer, Catton Park is screening wrestling flick ‘Fighting with My Family’ on Fri 23rd and 70’s classic ‘Grease’ on Sunday 25th August. With a couple of other showings through the weekend as well, check out the full list here  and grab your girlfriends for a fun night out.

Outdoor Cinema – Pop-Up Pictures, Oulton Broad – Nicholas Everitt Park, Thurs 5th September 

80’s cult classic horror ‘The Lost Boys; is coming to the outdoor cinema at Oulton Broad. This unique opportunity is a can’t miss – but it’s an age 15+ event so make sure to check before you book!

Outdoor Cinema – The Greatest Showman, Hoveton House, Sat 14th September

In support of East Anglian Chrildren’s Hospices, finish the summer with one last viewing of The Greatest Showman – go on, it is for charity! Food and drink available or bring a picnic.
