A Christmas Carol – Circus Style
Our friends at Theatre Royal talk with Massimiliano Rossetti, Founder & Artistic Director of Lost in Translation Circus.
What is A Circus Carol?
A Circus Carol is a piece of contemporary circus combining spectacular theatre and compelling story-telling, freely inspired by Charles Dickens’ A Christmas Carol.
What inspired you to put a circus twist on the Dickens’ classic?
One of the things that inspired me about Dickens’ much-loved story is its sense of magic and adventure. I love the fact that the main character embarks on an amazing journey that will ultimately transform his life. I think you can experience the same sense of wonder and adventure through life in circus. And Christmas is also one of my favourite festivities!
A Circus Carol debuted at the Playhouse last Christmas, how did audiences react?
Norwich audience response was amazing, much better than what we expected. People utterly loved it and we sold out in the blink of an eye.
Are you excited to make your debut at the Theatre Royal? How will you adapt the show for a different stage?
I am so looking forward to being on stage at the Theatre Royal with a full production that my company, Lost in Translation Circus, created together with Norwich Theatre. I’m very excited and relish the challenge to be scaling up the show for the Theatre Royal’s stage.
Why should people come and see A Circus Carol?
It is a fantastic tale in itself and with the gravity-defying contemporary circus skills, this show is what you want to be going to see at Christmas or any other day!
With the uncertainty facing the industry at this time, what was it like to perform at INTERLUDE this Summer?
The partnership that we created with Norwich Theatre was something special, a wonderful feeling and an amazing achievement that will stay with us for the rest of our life. We made what felt like impossible happen in a world that had drastically changed. We brought hope not just to ourselves but to fellow colleagues in the industry. It was amazing to hear people clapping and laughing and see audiences enjoy themselves.
As one of Italy’s most famous comedians Toto’ would say: “Give us the strength to make our people laugh.”
And finally, what is your favourite thing about Norwich and/or Norfolk?
The vibrant energy that the city can give you, some of my favourite humans live in Norwich, truly amazing people!
Charles Dickens’ timeless classic Christmas Carol is literally turned on its head in this spectacular production filled with gasps, thrills and laughs. Combining acrobatics and truly amazing trickery with ghosts of Christmas past, present and future, this marvellously intricate reimagining captures all the thrills and spills of the original festival tale with even more spectacle.
A Circus Carol plays at Norwich Theatre Royal from 16 – 23 December, 2020. For more information and to book call Box Office on 01603 630 000 or visit norwichtheatre.org
